Journey 8F: Big Apple 6 ...

Cap' n Baldy here!

Wednesday, April 27th -- GUGGENHEIM AND BEAUTIFUL ...

Ah ... the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum ... that dramatic, spiraling white-beige structure designed by Frank Lloyd Wright ... treasure chest of contemporary art! Let us see what awaits us within!

Upon entry, our museum program map advises us that we shall be seeing works by Peter Fischli and David Weiss, a renowned team of Swiss artists. Following the advice of Mike, our NYC-fireman-neighbor, we decide to start at the top and work our way down the Spiral. So we begin ...
The double doors of our elevator open upon a pile of old scaffolding, used paint containers, brushes and rollers...I think we have arrived at some maintenance area for the museum ... we have not ... this is art ...
On a screen, a black-and-white video shows a tire rolling down a ramp into something that knocks over a lighted candle that lights the fuse of a rocket on wheels that does something to cause black foamy goop to flow into a bottle to do something else ... remember Rube Goldberg of years back? The display is entitled The Way Things Go ... people watch in utter silence, with rapt attention ...
Proceeding onward, we encounter a work that looks exactly like a commercial pipe elbow ... it is entitled Tube ...Dude ...what DEPTH!  We proceed ...
Divider  in cast rubber ... note the strong resemblance to a plastic silverware tray you'd buy at a 99-cent store...
Man's World in cast rubber ... notice the realism of the electric shaver and Q-tips!
Pig's Anus (title mine) -- notice the dude with the cap in the far background!
Tree Stump and Dude Walking Away...Rendered in Cast Rubber and Natural Flesh ... the dude walking away is me!

We segue from the Black and White theme into a Tan theme ... which means glops of clay mashed together in various forms ... here's a favorite of Goldilocks ...
                                                                  Clean and Dirty
Goldilocks' inner thought  -- "I need a guide to help me understand and appreciate this stuff!"
Baldy's inner thought -- "A guide won't help! This stuff really sucks!"

Interior spiral gallery of the Guggenheim ... really impressive!

One bright spot in the Guggenheim collection was the colorful collection in the Thannhauser Gallery ... really impressive works by Monet, Cezanne, Degas and Picasso ...
Picasso work ... we don't know the title but we like it!
What is it? Who made it?
Freely admitting I'm a clueless curmudgeon about such art as Fischli and Weiss produced, we are both surmising that now is the time to leave the Guggenheim ... a walk in Central Park seems in order ... besides, we have to take that walk to get back to Phillips Club. We're outta here...
                                                  YES! Our spirits are REVIVED!

We've known about Carole King and her music for years ... but we didn't appreciate how PROLIFIC a song-writing artist she is ...400 of her compositions recorded by over 1,000 artists, 100 hit singles and six Grammys! This show has the good stuff...we know all the songs ...
A great upbeat show ... wonderfully sung, danced and acted... Carole King is played by Chilina Kennedy, an excellent actress and musician ... we take in the matinee!
Good burgers after the show at Brooklyn Diner on Times Square ... REALLY good burgers...good fries as well!

Heading uptown...there's more to come! Stay well!

Affectionately,

Baldy
