Thursday and Friday, April 28th and 29th -- AN ELEGANT CLOSURE ...
'Tis a funny thing how certain things get stuck in memory after a visit to a celebrated art museum...Goldilocks can't get this image out of her mind ...
Tendu Devant ... casting by Degas, posed in 1890, cast in 1920
Tendu Devant -- photo by Baldy, 2016
Seeing as I am clueless about ballet, Goldilocks advises me that Tendu Devant is a formal ballet position ... it seems as though Goldilocks may be considering applying to the New York City Ballet Company!
The Met has a serious collection of medieval arms and armor. While strolling through this fine exhibit, we chance upon the dress uniform of some medieval boy-wonder ... word has it that Napoleon had a suit made in the same style ...
Hmmm -- here's something to ponder... did the dude who wore this have a grievous macho-complex or did he really get heated up during battle?
Zabar's -- a deli of great renown up on Broadway and West 80th Street...my Brooklyn-born-retired-musician-friend Joe Atkins told me to GO HERE ... so we make a pilgrimage ... over truly delicious coffee and the best of hot bagels, I read about the rise in housing sales in Queens while Goldilocks talks politics with a stranger ...
Neue Galerie is a beautiful small gallery near The Met which is focused on German and Austrian art of the early 20th century ...
This is the work we came to see ... Gustav Klimt's Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, better known to recent moviegoers as The Woman in Gold ...captured by the Nazis, retrieved in a lawsuit from the Austrian government, sold for $135 million ... now on permanent display at Neue Galerie. It is a truly arresting work that does not disappoint us...
A Klimt landscape similar to one on display here ... I feel a bit sad, feeling I am gazing into a Beautiful Grand Age about to be crushed by the horror of World War 2 and the Holocaust... an age of innocence and high artistic attainment obliterated... I must accept my own era as being the way it is ...
Edvard Munch's The Scream -- also on display now at Neue Galerie ... symbol of modern angst ...four versions were painted ... Version Four sold for $120 million at a Sotheby's auction in 2012 ...Munch and his Expressionist colleagues drew grotesque nudes ... many of adolescent girls ... these were confiscated by the Nazis...Barbara and I feel uncomfortable looking at them ...
Neue Galerie chamber as we see it today ...
It is Thursday evening ... Barbara and I arrive at Lincoln Center to see the New York City Ballet's production entitled Jewels ... We become aware that this is to be a grand event in a grand venue, the David H. Koch Theater ...

Panoramic Shot of Lincoln Center from the Koch Theater's outside balcony...
Playbill Cover ...
The audience arrives for the program ... some members are moms with aspiring little ballerinas...
The program is luscious ... divided into three sections entitled Emeralds, Rubies and Diamonds ...choreographed by George Balanchine ... featuring music by Faure', Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky ... performed flawlessly by the New York Ballet Orchestra. The dancing is gorgeously graceful... of course, a ballet dancer doesn't achieve that consummate grace easily ...
The reality of a ballerina's feet ...
========================================================================
It is Friday ... we make ourselves ready to return home to San Diego ... no haste is needed ... we have the time and support we need to make our preparations without undue stress ...
We say goodbye to the gracious staff at The Phillips Club ...
Goldilocks snaps a farewell picture of flowers in the lobby of The Phillips Club ...
It's now time to go ... we ride to JFK in a private car driven by a gracious, capable driver who was born in the Dominican Republic ... a pleasant and restful ride, well worth the money we paid for it ...
At Lindbergh Field, our son Dan is waiting to drive us home ...
Our splendid journey of New York adventures has ended!
